They set off from Klagenfurt on their bikes and, after more than 200 kilometers on the road, arrived in Lignano Sabbiadoro ready for an unforgettable adventure. A group of Austrian cyclists chose to spend a weekend of sport and relaxation thanks to the hospitality of the Lignano Holiday Consortium, on the occasion of Sandy Wheels – Lignano Cycling Experience 2025.
From September 26th to 28th, Lignano Sabbiadoro transformed into a huge playground for cycling and active holiday enthusiasts. Our Austrian guests, warmly welcomed by the consortium, had the chance to discover the town from a new perspective — by pedaling between the sea, the lagoon, and the Tagliamento River along a scenic 20-kilometer bike loop, closed to traffic for three days to ensure both safety and freedom for cyclists and families alike.
At the heart of the event was the Bike Expo Village — a lively meeting point full of energy and ideas: stands dedicated to the world of cycling, street food, travel stories, and talks featuring some of the sport’s most iconic figures. Among the guests were journalist Claudio Gregori, who paid tribute to the legendary Ottavio Bottecchia, and champions Alessandro De Marchi and Daniele Pontoni, who shared their experiences and passion with the audience.
Moments of inspiration weren’t missing either, like the talk “Two Wheels, a Thousand Stories”, which gave voice to travelers and cyclists who turned their personal challenges into new adventures.
Outdoors, cycling activities multiplied: from guided tours to the spectacular Fat Sand Bike ride at sunrise, up to sporting events such as the Laroste Gravel Ride and the Gravel Race, part of the official FCI national calendar. The event was fully accessible thanks to the Bike Point and a free bike rental service, allowing everyone to take part — even without their own bike.
For our guests and all participants, Sandy Wheels – Lignano Cycling Experience was much more than just an event: it was a new way to discover Lignano Sabbiadoro as an ideal destination for cycling holidays, where sea, nature, and hospitality come together to create authentic experiences.
And, like every memorable journey, this one ends with a promise: Sandy Wheels will return in 2026, ready to deliver new emotions to all those who love exploring the wonders of Lignano Sabbiadoro on two wheels.
